森美術館の次回展は、日本のアートシーンの“明日”を見渡すべ く、多様なジャンルのアーティストやクリエイターを紹介する「六本木クロッシング」。第３回となる本展では「芸術は可能か？」※という古くて新しい問いを 出発点に、エネルギーに溢れ、力強く明日に挑む日本のアートの“今”をご覧いただきます。長いキャリアを持つアーティストから若手注目株までの20組によ る、写真、彫刻、インスタレーション、映像、 グラフィティ・アート、パフォーマンスなど全く違う作品同士が互いに刺激し合い、「交差 （クロッシング）」します。
展覧会では、現代社会の中のさまざまな問題を描くアート、他者との協働やジャンルを横断した表現により新たな 可能性を見せるプロジェクト、私たちの日常があるストリートを舞台とする創作活動、そして新しい美学の誕生を予感させる新世代の表現など、3人のキュレー ターが選んだ数多くの最新作や話題作を紹介します。
社会・経済が不安定で将来が見えにくくなっている今こそ、アート の本質や可能性についてもう一度考える良いチャンス。「六本木クロッシング2010展」だからこそ見えてくる発見、驚きや感動、次世代を切り開く創造力を ぜひ実感してください。
※「芸術は可能か？」アーティスト・グループ、ダムタイプの故・古橋悌二がバブル経済崩壊直後、1990年代 のアートを考え、アートがアートの枠の中に留まらず、社会に影響を与えることにより成立する可能性を問いかけた。

The Creative Potential of a New Japan

“Roppongi Crossing” is a series of exhibitions that introduce the work of diverse artists and creators with an eye to present a vision of the future Japanese art scene. Starting from a fundamental question – “Can there be art”* - the third in the series highlights the ambitions and dynamic talents who are today actively turning the pages of Japanese art history. The exhibition represents a “crossing” of diverse output – photography, sculpture, installation, video, graffiti, performance and so on – by 20 artists and units ranging from up-and-coming stars to art world veterans.
While the artworks chosen by the team of three curators are all new or topical, they are diverse in their approaches. Some refer directly to various social issues, while others take the form of projects, presenting new possibilities by their collaborative or trans-genres natures. The exhibition also introduces creative activities generated from the streets which is a stage of our daily life, as well as the work of a new generation that suggest the emergence of a new aesthetic.
Now more than ever, with society and the economy going through a period of immense change, we are provided with a rare opportunity to think about the very nature of art. It will be a new Japan that emerges from this period of upheaval, and the discoveries, surprises and insights offered in this exhibition provide a clue as to what the art of that new Japan will be like.

*In the 1990s, in the aftermath of the collapse of the bubble economy, the late Furuhashi Teiji, of the artist group Dumb Type, is known to have asked, “Can there be art” which seemed to inquire whether art can exist outside of the art world’s confines, in a direct discourse with society in general.

トーキョーワンダーサイト（TWS）の二国間交流事業は、海外のレジデンス施設と提携し、双方向にクリエーターを派遣・招聘する文化交流事業です。
昨年度は5カ国、今年度は7カ国との交流事業を行っています。
クリエーターはそれぞれ2カ月から3カ月にわたり、各派遣先にてリサーチや滞在制作を行いました。
このたび、TWS 本郷にて、昨年度と今年度に行った韓国・台湾・ニュージーランド・イギリス・スウェーデンの5カ国への派遣クリエーターに6名よる帰国報告会を開催します。
滞在成果としての作品を中心とした展示とともに、派遣先のレジデンス施設や各都市の動向について、スライドを交えながら帰国報告を行います。
なお、TWS では、来年度もこの二国間交流事業を継続し、派遣クリエーターを募集する予定です。

The presentations of artists, researchers, curators and projects during the symposium “CODED CULTURES – Exploring Creative Emergences” are giving an inside look on creative practices and forms of organization explored by the participants.

The combination of projects, artist presentations and contextualized lectures by curators and producers from Japan, Austria and Europe on the intersection of different fields of creativity will be outlined in panel presentations and discussions.

The second edition of CODED CULTURES is a binational festival (Austria – Japan) in the year 2009 to explore new artistic practices and creative ability profiles within media integrated project-cultures and digital media related arts, focusing on Japan and Europe. The festival is part of the official »Austria – Japan Year 2009«.

Through the establishment of new creative cultures, enabled by digital media and global communication networks, new practices and ability profiles of creative and artistic delineation and exploration are gaining new grounds. Furthermore, economic models are eager to create synergies with symbolic values of cultural and artistic programs to deal with the potentials of »creativity«. At the moment these profiles are roughly subsumed (e.g. as »creative class«), but at the present day it is difficult to predict which catalysts and draft programs can be put into effect for these creative innovation processes. On the other hand it has to be questioned if innovation like it is understood by policy makers of entrepreneurship is a desired state for artistic projects and networks. This phenomena which is set up via global nodes of creativity (e.g. networks, communities, organizations, projects, etc.) is more and more uprooting disciplinary guidelines and permitted structures of local traditions. Therefore, this vectors have changed the ways of cooperation and development in socio-cultural production paradigms. CODED CULTURES is asking how artistic and creative projects are dealing with this conditions and in which way they support or antagonize this developments.

In this context »new« things happen based on cultural conditions of transformation, which have departed from established mechanisms of delineation and creation. They activate an innovation-fabric which does not yet have any adequate surface for the assessment of observations and mediations in such transformation processes. »CODED CULTURES – Exploring Creative Emergences« enables and presents artistic-creative production coherences which are based on digitally linked media-cultural organizations which have actively integrated these into the delineation process of their operating level. Thereby, new options of interaction emerge within the intersection of art / culture / economics / knowledge development / idea aggregation / intermediation a.s.o. This parameters are integrated in the conditions of digital communication and media technologies, as well as their conditions of participation.

Therefore, the festival creates a surrounding in which new ways of emerging arts, creativity, theories, projects and ideas can be explored in the field of digital media related forms of creative delineation and arts. The particular aim is to present, discuss and criticize topics, which are situated on the intersection of disciplines and activities in order to enforce new potentials of artistic practices and positions. By these means, persons who derive joy from discovering ways to circumvent limitations, are welcome to take part of the festival. Regarding this, CODED CULTURES is presenting projects, works, theories and networks which are shaping new vectors of creation and art situated between: e.g. Science & Art, Technology & Art, Design & Art, Fashion & Art, a.s.o.

CODED CULTURES 2009とは?
CODED CULTURES 2009は、日本と欧州におけるメディアを活用したプロジェクト型活動とデジタルメディア系アートの新しい実践の形や創造力の探求を目的とする二国間交流フェスティバル（日本オーストリア交流年2009公式事業）です。本フェスティバルでは、クリエイティブな活動の実態を検証し、メディア関連分野を専門とするアーティスト、キュレーター、あるいは科学者による作品·アイディアを発表し、意見交換を可能とするプラットフォームを提供することに主眼を置いています。「CODED CULTURES ―クリエイティブな発想の出現」では、デジタルメディア時代の諸条件とそれに伴うアートの実践の変容を前提に、分野を横断し、ハイブリッドになりつつある文化と芸術の創造性と実践を規定するコード（記号、規範）の諸問題を検討します。

EXPosition of mythology - ELectronic technology

Content:
The EXPosition of Mythology - ELectronic Technology explores notions of technology, mythology and religion through the perspective of Nam June Paik's first solo exhibition in 1963, EXPosition of Music ELectronic Television. Nam June Paik's first solo exhibition is taken as representative of the thinking and concerns Paik would later explore in his practice and represents a bridge between Eastern and Western philosophies offering an alternative perspective into how technology, mythology and religion can be understood from a more anthropological perspective.

In this 1963 exhibition, Paik presented his first experiments with televisions, his prepared pianos and several other objects that invited audience participation. Paik’s use of the exhibition space, including hanging a dead cow’s head in the entrance and making people walk around a giant balloon to enter the rest of the exhibition, highlights his emphasis the viewer's participation and bodily experience. In addition, Paik also raised issues concerning the experience of time,media, history, and knowledge by suggesting different themes and concepts through the works created for the exhibition, the posters displayed, and the type of participation solicited to experience this show. Selected works will be presented alongside documentation related to different themes to emphasize the relevance and development of the concerns present in Paik’s exhibition in relation to historical, cultural and anthropological perspectives informed by a reading of the forty years that have passed since EXPosition of Music, Electronic Television.

Taking part of its title from Cockney rhyming slang, Sherbet Dab Swivel converts a taxicab and other street apparatus into a new outdoor sculpture for London. inspired by many equestrian statues he found around the city, Japanese sculptor and musician Ujino based its form on a figure on horseback, metamorphosed — like a Transformer toy — into a twenty-first century monument to urban transport, complete with flashing lights and intermittent sounds created by Ujino's Rotators.

　創形美術学校では、このたび東京発のリアルな視覚表現を発信してゆくサテライト・プログラム「TOKYO STORIES」を開始いたします。
「TOKYO STORIES」は、現代の社会に向かい合う強度を持った表現を作り出す場として美術学校が機能するために、その方法を模索し、開拓し、提示してゆく事を目指しています。
「TOKYO STORIES」では、今後サテライト・プログラムを次々と実施して行く予定です。
　第1回目となる今回は、2009年４月からスタートするコンテンポラリーアート専攻からアーティスト宇治野宗輝氏の新作「The Ballad of Backyard」展示と、ゲストとして、会田誠氏（美術家）、片岡真実氏（森美術館シニア・キュレーター）、小崎哲哉氏（『REAL TOKYO』,『ART iT』発行人兼編集長）を迎え、今必要な現代の美術教育をテーマに、トークショーをおこないます。

'A crossband repeater allows two radio stations to communicate that ordinarily would not be able to do so because of the distance or terrain between them.’
Ujino Muneteru transforms mechanical sounds into complex rhythms. Bored by the technical limits of his instruments, the guitarist and bassist experiments with new sounds. Different sounding bodies widen the spectrum of resonance; simple mechanical motors produce new tones. In particular domestic appliances, tools, and large machinery from the fifties to the seventies play a significant role here because of their mechanical simplicity and haptic palpability. Points of reference to the Japanese “Noise Music”, a type of sound movement from the eighties rooted in John Cage and the Fluxus, can also be seen.
In his first solo presentation in Europe Ujino Muneteru deals with the cultural and historic integration of the East and West using sounds. Muneteru, growing up in the consumer society of Tokyo, sees himself confronted with the historic industrial space of the GDR at PSM. PSM is located in a freight garage of the former transport establishment of the Central Committee of the SED. In Crossband Muneteru does not wish to teach, he wishes to investigate and record a playful catenation between history and the future of spaces.
Crossband speaks about the concurrence, the intersection of sound waves, of information from language or sounds. Two installations are in the forefront of this communication cross-link - Pickle-Up and Plywood City.
Pickle-Up consists of two old GDR motor cars, which have lost color and shape since the collapse of the GDR and have succumbed to the elements, like a pickle in its brine.
Plywood City refers to a part of Tokyo, in the vernacular, built from wood. Inspired by it, Muneteru constructs a model city, which is animated by kinetic objects and sound. The basis of the city is formed by art transport crates, whose misappropriation cites socialist flagstone buildings with irony.
Pickle-Up and Plywood City also function as interfaces between the past and future of the space of PSM - the former GDR freight garage and the future gallery.

Deitch Projects is pleased to present, After the Reality 2, an exhibition curated by Tokyo gallerist Hiromi Yoshii, featuring work by Yosuke Bandai, Enlightenment, Daisuke Fukunaga, Ujino Muneteru, Yukiko Shibata, Akira Shimidu, Koichi Toya and Nobuyasu Sato. They are among the most intriguing new Japanese artists to have emerged after the generation of ‘Superflat’ – the Japanese post-modern art movement championed by Takashi Murakami. With the exception of the art collective Enlightenment, who are godfathers to the emerging generation, all of the artists are showing their work in New York for the first time.

A 10 day long curated art event "New Tokyo Contemporaries" will be held in the Spring of 2008 at a new Tokyo destination site, the Shin-Marunouchi building.
The event is held in conjunction with the Marunouchi Art Week and intended to bring together many people to enjoy new Japanese art. 7 members of the next generation of Tokyo galleries will participate in a co-curated exhibition entitled "end of the tunnel". The event will also feature a series of art performances and a special-guest talk event.
